Rafael Riqueni is in Prison 5

Unexpected for some…

But maybe not for Rafael.

Why is Rafael Riqueni in Prision?

After a quite Sunday afternoon, I stumble across this puzzling fact.

Quite a surprise to me but according to his press release “he knew that could happen and for that he was prepared.”

Rafael is a much loved artist in the flamenco community and one of the most decorated guitarists of Spain.

The representative of the musician did not want to reveal neither the facts which led to the imprisonment, or the length of the sentence to which Rafael Riqueni faces. “We have yet to speak with our lawyer and may not be convenient,” Bech (his rep), seemed nevertheless hopeful about the immediate fate of the artist he said.

Rafael has had some mental problems in the past and has apparently been struggling financially for the past 20 years.

That aside he has been well received world wide, both as a teacher and as an artist.

I wish him strength and courage for the possible months to follow.

Here’s a snap shot from the ForoFlamenco Forum

“That’s it,” (referring to a mental health issue (bipolar) “he went through some very difficult times and that’s why he was not performing for quite a long time. Eventually he found some helpful treatment and had made a comeback in the last couple of years.

The jail term is the result of a violent incident that took place in 2010 when he was in a very bad state, and it says that he is required to serve the 14 months because he ‘had a record’ (a criminal one, that is), so obviously it was not the first time something like that had happened.”

“…he is allowed to have a guitar and his medical treatment will continue. “
